Radina Soebiyanto, Collaborating Scientist/Engineer, NASA Goddard:
I’m an engineer by training but what I do heavily involves scientific research. I use different satellite-based and modeled climate data to understand how climate conditions contribute to infectious disease outbreaks. I develop mathematical and statistical models to relate them, and use the models to predict areas at risk for certain disease. In many cases we have to deliver products (such as a risk map) that can be used as decision making tool for federal and international agencies to plan for outbreak prevention and control efforts. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of our research, we have to be able to communicate with different people, from epidemiologist, entomologist, clinician, computer scientist, climate scientist to mathematician.
